AI is now a nuclear power, nice?
Google AI research subsidiary DeepMind has put one of its "reinforcement learning algorithm" or AI systems in charge of an experimental nuclear reactor in Switzerland. What could go wrong, right folks
As widely reported in the media, DeepMind has been put in charge of an experimental fusion plasma reactor in Switzerland. A pared down program based on what DeepMind learned about fusion containment has been deployed to adjust more than a dozen containment magnets thousands of times per second, to prevent hot plasma from touching the walls of the reactor — which would not be good, if that were to occur.
It requires too many calculations for a human engineer, but is apparently a breeze for an AI / machine learning system like DeepMind.
Let’s just hope it doesn’t go Ultron or Green Goblin on us all.
